Homologation & Street Legality (MFK)

Navigating Swiss traffic laws for electric motorbikes doesn't have to be complicated. At Findoak, we provide all the necessary paperwork with your street-legal purchase so you can get your license plate and get on the road immediately.

Here is everything you need to know about registering and riding your Sur-Ron in Switzerland.

1. Vehicle Categories & Driver's Licenses

Depending on the model you choose, your bike will fall into one of two official Swiss street-legal categories, or be strictly for off-road use.

Category L1e (Yellow License Plate)

  • Models: Sur-Ron Light Bee L1e
  • Top Speed: Electronically limited to 45 km/h.
  • License Required: Category AM (available from 15 years old) or a standard car driver's license (Category B).
  • Rules: You must use cycle paths where mandatory, and you are exempt from the highway vignette.

Category L3e / 11kW (White License Plate)

  • Models: Sur-Ron Ultra Bee
  • Top Speed: Up to 90 km/h (125cc motorcycle equivalent).
  • License Required: Category A1 (available from 16 years old).
  • Rules: Standard motorcycle traffic rules apply. You are permitted on highways (vignette required) and cannot use cycle paths.

Off-Road Models (No License Plate)

  • Models: Light Bee X, Ultra Bee R, Hyper Bee
  • License Required: None.
  • Rules: These models do not come with mirrors, turn signals, or a Certificate of Conformity (COC). They cannot be registered with the MFK. They are strictly for use on private property, motocross tracks, or designated off-road parks.

2. The Registration Process (How to get your plate)

When you purchase a street-legal (L1e or L3e) bike from Findoak, we handle the complex import paperwork for you. Here is the simple 3-step process to get your plate:

  1. We Provide the Documents: Upon delivery or local pickup in Uzwil, we hand you the original Certificate of Conformity (COC) and the stamped Swiss customs form (Form 13.20 A).
  2. Get Insurance: Contact your insurance provider with the details from Form 13.20 A to activate your electronic proof of insurance (eVn).
  3. Visit the StVA: Take the COC and Form 13.20 A to your cantonal road traffic office (Strassenverkehrsamt). Because it is a brand new vehicle with Findoak's provided paperwork, you do not need to show the bike to an inspector. They will hand you your license plate over the counter.

3. Modifications & Compliance

Your street-legal vehicle is homologated exactly as it leaves our workshop. While visual customization (like decals or changing plastics) is generally fine, modifying the powertrain or safety equipment can void your legal status.

  • Tuning: Removing electronic speed limiters, cutting restrictor wires, or installing aftermarket controllers instantly voids your street legality and insurance coverage.
  • Tires & Wheels: You may swap between street tires and off-road knobbies provided they meet the load and speed ratings on your COC. Note that all Findoak homologated wheelsets strictly feature 1 valve on both tires to maintain proper pressure management and compliance.
  • Mirrors & Indicators: These must remain securely attached and fully functional at all times on public roads.
